My thoughts on “The Daily”

I signed up for a free trial of “The Daily,” the new iPad-only “newspaper” from team Rupert Murdoch. Here are my thoughts: I like the idea of getting a package of news every morning like the olden days of newspaper. I like the design and graphics that are more like a magazine than a newspaper. I think the interactive elements, for the most part, are both fun and compelling. They add that new dimension. What I question—and this is where I really wonder if it can survive—is if you decide to read it later on in the day, it is just stale news.

Need You Now: A lesson in K.I.S.S.

Okay, so I totally loved this song from the very first time I heard it. I’ve listened to it countless times trying to analyze the writing, production, etc. So “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum winning a Grammy for Song of the Year does not surprise me at all.

Proud mom and dad tonight as we watched the credits roll for Danny Boyle‘s new movie, “127 Hours.” Great movie. I couldn’t help but move down in front to grab this shot of the credits with “Bryce Randle II” as Digital Lab Technician.

Pavlov’s Beau

So we all know the story of Pavlov’s Dogs. Here is a little version with our dog Beau. Our little shih tzu. He sleeps in a dog crate and also stays in there whenever we leave the house. Sometimes he stays outside, but generally, unless it’s a really long time, he stays in his crate when we leave the house.
On Sundays he’s gotten so used to it that when he sees us getting dressed in suits and ties, dresses, etc., and then hears Leslie click across the hard wood floor in her heels he now immediately marches into his crate without even being told.

Xclip iPad Music Stand & other stuff

So the iPad has all kinds of cool apps for musicians. I have been searching for the perfect gig tool for the iPad and I finally found it. But it’s not an app — it’s a music stand. The Xclip iPad Music Stand works with all standard mic stands. I bought an Xclip a couple of weeks ago direct from the manufacturer. It came very quickly after ordering (Priority Mail, from Texas if I remember right.) After mounting it to a standard mic stand, the iPad easily snapped into place. It worked perfectly. Snap in, snap out.

Feature page projects

When teaching publication design, I’m always very proud at this point in the semester with my students’ work. They are done with the fourth of their five projects and they are really starting to look like real designers. All that’s left now is magazine design. And this semester we are going to have a group working on an iPad digital magazine in additional to conventional magazines as well. Anyways. Just to show off, here is the collection of their feature page projects that I quickly took with my iPhone.

Time to rethink late-night talk? – CSMonitor.com

Saw this article in at CSMonitor.com and was thinking along these same lines before I even read this quote from Paul Levinson, author of “New New Media”:

… “nobody below the age of 60 is really tuning into these shows anymore.” Rather, says the author of “New New Media,” they are getting their entertainment from the Internet, their mobile phones, and other devices at all times of the day.”
